Urban Culture in Theory and Action is an international two-week summer school at University of Copenhagen, 6th to 17th of August 2018. Deadline for applications: 1st of April 2018 second round: 1st of June 2018.

During this summer school in the heart of Copenhagen, students from across the world get an opportunity to move from analyzing problems in urban societies to creating possible solutions and identifying real potentials. Students can thus try their hand at implementing ideas for change in the practice and production of culture in relation to the built environment.

Organized together with Strøm music festival, the summer school combines academic theory with hands-on practice, using a specific area of Copenhagen as a laboratory for developing creative and innovative solutions to actual problems or for identifying potentials hidden in urban space. This case-based learning approach is underpinned by a do-it-yourself philosophy and a cross-cultural perspective on urban development.

By means of lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials and field trips, students in groups will engage with a range of actors, including cultural practitioners, grassroots activists, social entrepreneurs, municipal authorities and private businesses as well as with urban theorists. Bringing academic knowledge of urban life together with empirical and practical know-how, the students develop their own ideas into project proposals. These proposals, in turn, can inspire entrepreneurship and innovation in the students’ home cities.
